How Central Bankers Attempt to “Cure” Insolvency

Like trying to patch a nuclear reactor with scotch tape and chewing gum, the central banks of the world’s leading economies are trying to Spackle over cracks in the global monetary system with a variety of desperate tactics and measures.

Unfortunately, hiding the cracks does nothing to strengthen the underlying infrastructure. To the contrary, hiding the cracks dupes individuals into believing all is well, even as the monetary system is crumbling around them.

Mining for Gold on Wall Street

Many technical analysts are saying the gold and silver markets are “breaking down.” I say the precious metals markets are cracking up…with laughter at the monetary shenanigans going on in the US, Europe and elsewhere.

Sure, gold and silver have suffered a sharp correction over the last few weeks. But so what; corrections always occur during long-term bull markets. Gold and silver are still cheap, which means that long-term investors cannot afford to ignore the recent weakness in the precious metals markets.

Markets Make Fools of Us All

As the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced further above 10,000 yesterday, gold slipped back below $1,200 an ounce. We are not exactly sure what we think about the stock market's resurgence – or about gold's retreat – but we are pretty sure what we do NOT think.

We do not think stocks have vaulted into a new bullish trend; nor do we think gold has slumped into a new bearish trend. Rather, the recent moves feel like short-term, counter-trend noise. This noise might last a few weeks, but we would not mistake it for music.
