Water – Still Blue Gold

I was in Bangkok while the floods were raging. I also visited Cambodia. The floods were in the news there as well. Though it did not affect Phnom Penh, where I was, the remote villages were dealing with a lot of water.

That’s the curious thing about water. There always seems to be either too much of it or not enough. What follows is another look at my favorite commodity and the opportunities of investing in it.

Blue Gold…Still Shining

About five years ago, I launched my investment service, Mayer’s Special Situations with a special report, entitled Blue Gold.

The report laid out the compelling long-term case for investing in water-related stocks. The stocks I recommended in that report have performed extremely well, far outpacing the S&P 500 Index. But the investment backdrop for the water sector has become even more compelling today than it was five years ago.

As the World Turns: A Few Notes on Emerging Market Investing

In a recent edition of The Daily Reckoning, Bill Bonner observed, “The world turned against them at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. But if the world turns long enough, it comes back to where it began.” He was writing about India. But he could have been writing about China…or Nicaragua…or any one of a number of emerging markets.

Water is Too Cheap, Part II

Water is too cheap in the US…and it is also too cheap in the global stock markets. These are the main thoughts I took away from the Gabelli Water Investment Summit in New York earlier this year.

The most eye-opening presentation was by Nick DeBenedictis, the CEO of Aqua America, which is the second largest investor-owned water utility in the country. (It trades on the NYSE under the ticker WTR.) DeBenedictis told us about a city that “wondered why it couldn’t put fires out anymore.” The reason was the pipes were so old and clogged that there was only two inches for water flow. You’re never going to get enough water flow out of a pipe that size to put out a fire. “That’s not even enough to take a shower,” DeBenedictis said.

Water Stocks: A Few of My Favorite Things, Part I

Water – I’ve been urging my subscribers to invest in water stocks for several years…and Hyflux is one of my favorites. Hyflux (HYFXF: OTC Bulletin Board) operates in China, Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and North Africa. It is involved in a variety of water projects, from desalination to recycling. It was among the first stocks ever recommended in my investment service, Mayer’s Special Situations, when I launched the “Blue Gold Portfolio” back in the summer of 2006. Since I recommended it, Hyflux is up 75%, while the S&P 500 is down 10%.

The Trade of the Century

When you think about hot commodities right now, you probably don’t think of water. Yet the price of water in some parts of the world is rising…sometimes very quickly. Take California, for example.

Mark Swatek is CEO of Southwest Water Co., a water utility that serves California and the Southwestern US. You may accuse him of talking his book when he says: “One of the fastest growing commodity prices is the price of metropolitan water [in Southern California].”
